Recent Community Protest

A recent protest at the "Say No To Burqas" mural bought an unwelcome group to Newtown, the APP party in support of the mural. Thought I'd share with you some of their comments posted shortly afterwards on another blog.

Nick: It is great to be a member of APP as we are the only political party demonstrating opposition to Islamic immigration and their backward culture in Australia.
Sunday was another opportunity to expose the stupidity of the watermelon protesters seeking to deface Sergio's mural.
It always amazes me to see the gay unwashed ferals support the Islamists. It is impossible to create dialogue with these useful idiots. The ferals are definitely a few beers short of a six-pack.

i was one of the defenders of the mural on Sunday and it made me feel good to know that little ol' me was doing my bit to preserve free speech. Living in close proximity to what I refer to as a 'nesting area' I decided to wear a wig and sunnies, I also took along my most favored weapons, washing powder!

Thanks Serge for inviting such a homophobic racist crowd to my neighbourhood.
PS. They are back today - screaming and swearing at passerbys.

Dirty old man

Is it just me or does this guy have a serious issue with women. First he's saying "Don't cover up" (cause I like my women whorish?) Now he seems to have an issue with women in control/power.

Last weekend, Serge temporarily changed his "Say No to Burqas" message to target our local Greens member, Fiona Byrne.

"[I wanted to] get people to look up Fiona Byrne, see who she is, what she stands for," he said.

I did, and thanks Serge. She's tops and I'm voting for her. What good publicity...

This guy had a good go today by changing "burqas" to "WAR". Im not sure if he was just driving by (that's his hippy van in front) and saw the opportunity or it was planned, but sadly, Serge caught him and held him by physical force (as seen in the photo) until the Police showed up.

Did we REALLY need six police to attend to one long-haired hippy????? Surely they have better things to do.

Welcome to all people, all races, all cultures!

Im going to start this blog by saying, Im really not much of a blogger but I've created this to show fellow Newtownians and like-minded friends that not all people in Newtown are racist idiots.

You may have heard or read about a "Say no to Burqas" mural in Newtown. In fact, it's in the news often since the creator is, by my reckoning, a sad man screaming for attention with issues of self-expression. His name is Sergio Redegalli.

Why do I care you ask? I walk by this mural daily and thought I would give an appropriate forum for the regular changes and responses from the community. The reason WHY this is important is because the Serge repaints this mural (often before Sunrise) every time it is "vandalised" by people who feel that perhaps this message does not reflect their own feelings or politics.

Can you blame them? Burqas and broader issues aside, I personally resent the fact that a middle-aged man is saying what women should and shouldn't wear in such a public manner. This mural has brought nothing but drama and unnecessary attention to an otherwise quite neighbourhood and it's time we saw the other side of the mural. Sometimes funny, often poignant and always defiant, I honour those that despite the numerous CTV cameras and regular late night guards, have achieved what I only can dream of.
